We rely on undergraduate and graduate research assistants for the success of our projects. We offer substantial support to both undergraduate and graduate students in the form of hourly salary, monthly stipends and/or tuition remission. Profiles of the current student research team are presented below. Wei Feng

Wei Feng received his master's degree in traffic and transportation planning and management and received his bachelor's degree in transportation engineeiring both at Beijing Jiaotong University in China. He has worked on some projects about traffic congestion management and optimization and then developed an interest in public transportation system. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree of Transportation Engineering at PSU. Wei's interests include ITS, traffic modelling and optimization. He hopes to gain more advanced traffic and transportation research technology and method through working in the ITS Lab at PSU. In his spare time, he likes hiking, basketball, swimming and badminton.

 
Rafael Fernandez-Moctezuma

Rafael was born and raised in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. He received his B.S. in Computer Systems Engineering from ITESM Campus San Luis (2001), and his M.Sc. in Computer Science from OGI-OHSU (2005). He is currently pursuing hs Ph.D. in Computer Science at Portland State University. His interests in database systems, machine learning, and knowledge discovery in databases intersect well with his curiosity in transportation systems. He is currently interested in system state estimation problems found in transportation. He enjoys photography, opera, science fiction, and politics.

 
Sirisha Kothuri

Sirisha was born and raised in Hyderabad, India, where she obtained a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Osmania University in 1999. She moved to Baton Rouge in Fall of 1999 to pursue a masters degree in Civil Engineering at Louisiana State University majoring in transportation. Her master's thesis dealt with updating a simulated household travel survey using Bayesian methods. Between 2001 and 2002, Sirisha worked as an Assistant Transportation Researcher at the Texas Transportation Institute in Austin, Texas. While at TTI, her work primarily dealt with forecasting travel demand models for the various urban areas in Texas. Sirisha plans to start on her Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in 2006. Currently she is working on travel time estimation algorithms and also assisting with literature review of HOV facilities. Sirisha presented her work at the 2006 ITE Quad Conference in Bellevue, WA. Sirisha received the 2006 ITS Oregon Scholarship. Sirisha is also a recipient of the Oregon Sports Lottery Graduate Scholarship ($2500) and was also selected as the Outstanding Graduate Research Assistant from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering for 2005-06. Sirisha received the 2007 Women's Transportation Scholarship ($2000) in May.

 
Huan Li

Huan Li received her master's degree in traffic and transportation planning and management at Beijing Jiaotong University in China. She has worked on inter-city railway and the highway passenger competition projects and then developed an interest in public transit systems from the Beijing regional traffic organization project. For her thesis, she explored an evaluation of design issues for impacts on bus transit operations under the circumstance that the increasing concern for TOD development in China has led to a growing interest in bus transit organization and facility design for improving the efficiency of the limited roadway space in moving a large number of people. Huan's interest in dealing with public transit problems in China drew her to the ITS program at PSU to study the updated technology and methods in the transportation field. She hopes to gain a more extensive view of transportation through working in the ITS Lab at PSU.

 
Kaveh Shabani

Kaveh is a graduate research assistant in ITS Lab. He received his bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and master's degree in traffic and transportation planning both at Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran. During his undergraduate studies, he was involved in several transportation and traffic related research projects. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree of Transportation Engineering at PSU. Kaveh's research interests include Transportation Network Performance Assessment; Network Analysis and Design; Transportation Systems Analysis; Risk and Security Analysis; Reliability Analysis; Evacuation Modeling; Transportation Planning; Mathematical Modeling and Optimization; Simulation. Kaveh has 3 years of experience in Urban Planning and Research Center of the Municipality of Tehran(UPRC)as an executive manager. He has also 3 years of experience in Tehran Mayor's young consulters Group. He has written a book in Algebra and Probability in 2002. He enjoys Sports(Soccer, Chess, Volleyball, PingPong, Badminton, Jugging, Swimming, ...) Singing, Camping, Hiking, Mathematics, ...in his free time.

 
Heba Alwakiel

Heba's three major interests and passions are civil engineering, traveling and walking. During her traveling and walking trips, reading maps, exploring roads and feeling directions have always fascinated her. As being fond of exploring roads, the first thing that grabbed her attention once she got out from Portland's airport was transportation discipline and streets' planning. From this sustained admiration, her interest in studying transportation systems began to grow and so she decided to pursue her master's degree in transportation. Heba is especially interested in safety issues and congestion problem solving which are major problems in her native country.

 
Alex Bigazzi

Alex became interested in transportation issues during extended travels as a musician. He earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering at Portland State, and is now pursuing a Master's degree here. His primary research interests relate to assessing the sustainability of our transportation systems, especially emissions estimation. Outside of school he likes to be in the fresh air for various pursuits, playing music, riding through the city, and looking for a little adventure.

 
Jesse Boudart

After moving to Oregon in 2005, Jesse attended Oregon State University for his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was especially interested in renewable energy systems and interned in 2007 at the Folkecenter for renewable energy in Denmark. After returning and inspired by his internship, Jesse worked with campuses and communities for tangible sustainability solutions in the Pacific Northwest. Looking ahead to a career, he became interested in exploring sustainable transportation options, particularly in high speed rail, freight and bicycle-pedestrian projects. He was drawn to Portland State because of the strong transportation program and now he is working on project minimizing CO2 emissions while replacing fleet vehicles.

 
Ryan Conrad

Ryan received a bachelors in physics from the University of Oregon in 2007. While working on his undergrad he worked in a biophysics lab and at the Lewis Center for NeuroImaging assembling MRI coils. After a brief break from school working at a bike shop, he decided to return to school and pursue a degree in transportation engineering after years of urban cycling sparked an interest in traffic operations and flow. His current research interests are freight logistics, transportation modeling and bicycle transportation. In his free time, Ryan likes to ride bicycles, work on physics problems and cook vegan food.

 
Chengyu Dai

Chengyu was born in Harbin China, which bears the nickname "ice city" with fantastic annual ice festival in January. Because of her internship with TriMet I-205/Portland Mall MAX Light Rail Project, she developed a great interest in Transportation Engineering. Thereby, she pursues to be transportation engineer. In her spare time, she likes sports, music and reading.

 
Lisa Diercksen

Lisa is a first year student in the MSCE program at PSU specializing in transportation. While at Iowa State University, she interned for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in Des Moines, IA; Kimley-Horn and Associates in Phoenix, AZ; and most recently with TranSystems in Kansas City, MO. At TranSystems, Lisa built a travel demand model for Kearney, MO, using VISUM modeling software and also worked on various traffic impact studies. She is excited to be in Portland and hopes to explore the great outdoors of the Northwest!

 
Nevin Freeman

Kristie Gladhill

Kristie's interest in transportation stems from interests in efficiency, sustainability, and serving society. Sustainability in transportation will involve not only reduced emissions and clean, renewable energy sources; but also addressing congestion and livability issues through ITS, public transportation, integration of land use planning and transportation infrastructure, and innovative traffic control structures such as roundabouts. Portland is an exciting place to be in this field. Kristie has worked in semiconductor manufacturing at Tektronix and a spin off, printhead manufacturing at Xerox, and as a database developer. She enjoys project management and implementing innovation. Originally from southern Illinois, she fell in love with the northwest and her future husband during summer internships at Tektronix and HP. She is happily married and keeps busy raising two sons along with her husband. Kristie plays flute, violin, and sings with the PSU Chamber Choir. She enjoys hiking, knitting, and reading.

 
Bryan Hangartner

Bryan was born in Portland in 1986 and has lived in Estacada, OR for most of his life. His natural inclination in designing and building things can be traced back to his earliest days of wooden blocks and mini legos. He has held internships at David Evans & Associates, GeoDesign, and the Oregon Department of Transportation, and in both academic and engineering practice settings has seen how important the transportation infrastructure is to the success of modern society. He is primarily interested in operational and safety improvements within Oregon's highway network. Although transportation engineering could almost qualify as a hobby, when he is not engaged in such work Bryan enjoys a wide range of activities including dancing, fishing, target shooting, choral music, airsoft, reading, and socializing as much as time will permit.

 
Todd Johnson

The challenges in the environment, social issues, and infrastructure facing our nation in transportation are what brought Todd to Portland State for a Master's degree. Having worked for one year in structural engineering, Todd knew that he wanted to be involved with challenges on a greater scale. Todd is hoping to join a state or federal agency upon graduation to help shift the focus from reliance on single occupancy passenger vehicles to a multi-modal approach. In his free time, you'll find Todd in the woods, on the beach, in the ocean, reading, exercising, cooking, or gardening.

 
Myeonwoo Lim

Myeonwoo Lim was born and raised in Gimcheon, Korea. He transferred to Portland State from Youngdong University in Korea. He completed Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science at PSU. Currently, he's pursuing a M.S. in Computer Science. His interests in network system and database drew him to the ITS lab's project where his knowledge would be applied and expanded.

Nathan is pursuing a Master of Urban and Regional Planning and is interested in the areas of Transportation and Land Use. A native of Washington State, Nathan went to New York to pursue undergraduate studies at Columbia. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in History, he worked for a community economic development non-profit, a social policy research institute, and most recently, served as a performance auditor for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority Office of the Inspector General.

 
Rolando Melgoza

Rolando was born in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in Independence, Missouri. Since the age of five, he has known that he wanted to be an engineer. As an undergraduate, Rolando interned at two companies over the course of three summers. Starting in 2005, he interned for two summers at Water District #1 of Johnson County in Lenexa, Kansas. In 2007 he spent the summer as a traffic engineering intern at Bucher Willis Ratliff Corporation in Kansas City, Missouri. After graduating from UMR, in an old fashioned westward trip, Rolando followed the Oregon Trail from Independence to Oregon to begin his graduate work at Portland State University. He was drawn to Portland because of the progress and attention it has placed on traffic and transportation. Aside from school, Rolando plans on exploring the area. He hopes to go hiking, skiing without injuring himself, and checking out the ocean.

 
Adam Moore

Adam is a transplanted Southerner who received his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech in 2009, specializing in transportation systems engineering. Having been raised in the Atlanta suburbs, and living downtown for five years, he developed a keen interest in the transportation issues affecting one of the largest, and most congested, metropolises in the country. What attracted him to Portland is what Atlanta lacks: a progressive transportation vision and a green-minded population that goes out of its way to use alternative modes of transportation. His interests include public transportation and multimodal systems. In his free time, he enjoys running, hiking, and exploring the Pacific Northwest.

Sathish Kumar was born and brought up in India. He did his B.Tech there and worked for two years in Third Binary Alternatives, India. He has lots of experience developing web applications and banking applications. He has worked on projects for top companies like EMC, BankOfAmerica, Merrill Lynch. His research interest in Databases, Programming Languages made him come to the US to do Master's degree in the field of Computer Science. He enjoys working on new things in the PORTAL project (currently R Plot). He likes the scenic beauty and the climate of Portand. He loves outdoor activities (Travelling to scenic places, playing cricket, water games, riding car). He hopes to enjoy visiting lots of new places in the US.

 
David Ruelas

David is originally from Hollywood, California but has lived in Tucson, Arizona and is currently seeking a M.U.R.P. and M.S.C.E Dual Degree specializing in Transportation. His interest in transportation stems from living a portion of his childhood years through the construction of the Glenn Anderson Freeway, Interstate 105, directly behind his family home. While at the University of Southern California he was exposed to many talks from national, state and local transportation leaders. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree he worked for the City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles World Airports. He then went to work in Tucson, Arizona and sat on various transportation committees. His experiences working in a fast growing region of Arizona solidified his interest in furthering his education in Transportation. He is currently working on research to quantify and analyze the costs of climate changes on transportation infrastructure in Portland, Oregon.

 
Meead Saberi K

[Webpage] Meead came to Portland from Mashhad, Iran. He received his bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in August 2007 from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. During his undergraduate studies, he was involved in several transportation and traffic related research projects. He is currently pursuing a Master of Transportation Engineering degree at PSU. His research interests are ITS, traffic flow theory and transportation modeling. He enjoys biking, photography and blogging in his free time. He intends to continue his studies to get his PhD and hopes to work in an academic position in future.

Shreemoyee moved to Portland from India in 2009 and fell in love with its natural beauty. After her Bachelor's degree, she was working as a software engineer with Infosys Technologies Limited in Bangalore, India. She wishes to pursue her Master's degree in the field of Computer Science. Her interest lies in doing cutting-edge research in the field of algorithm development, databases and programming languages. She loves to work on the PORTAL project as well as other projects with the ITS lab. In her free time she enjoys playing violin and pencil sketching.

 
Lindsay Walker

Lindsay is pursuing a Master of Urban and Regional Planning and is interested in the areas of Transportation, in particular non-motorized transportation and transit. Originally from California, Lindsay has previously worked as a Transportation Planner and Bicycle Coordinator for the California Department of Transportation, District 1. Upon entering the Masters program at Portland State in 2008, Lindsay received the Initiative for Bicycle and Pedestrian Innovation Scholarship and completed an internship with Alta Planning + Design where she developed a professional planning and design guidebook and workshop on bicycle boulevards. Lindsay is currently working on research to analyze the impact of climate change on surface transportation infrastructure in the Pacific Northwest.

 
Nikki Wheeler

Nikki received a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Seattle University in 2007. Through internship experiences during her undergraduate career at Sound Transit and DKS Associates: Transportation Solutions, Nikki developed a strong interest in transportation engineering. Following graduation, she worked as an assistant engineer for DKS Associates, and had the opportunity to work on many transportation planning and design projects in the Seattle area. She is currently a second year student in the MSCE program specializing in transportation at PSU.

 
James Whiteneck

Chengxin Dai

Chengxin is a senior in Civil Engineering. She was born into an engineer family in Harbin China.Her father is a mechanical engineer.When she was young, she was fascinated by machinery within airplanes and vehicles. Later, the knowledge she learned motivates her to become a good transportation engineer.

 
Spicer Matthews

Spicer moved to Portland from New York to seek out a degree in Engineering from Portland State University, and also to seek out new job opportunities on the West Coast....well kinda! That is the response he gives his parents and any academics that may ask. His real reason for moving to the Northwest was his love of snowboarding, mountain biking, and white water kayaking. Along with working on the PORTAL project, Spicer has his hands in many other projects both on campus and in industry. Spicer's “real” job is he works as a property manager/IT consultant. Yes, rather odd combo, you will have to corner Spicer to find out more about this broad career that he has. Note: he tends to get a little more chatty if you offer to take him out for a drink! Spicer plans to finish up his undergrad in computer science, and a minor in business, any day now and then plans to continue in a master's in computer science at Portland State University.

 
Bandit
Lab Mascot Student, Department of Woof, Dog State University



Bandit is a border collie / lab mix that is sometimes seen around the lab and ITS events. He's a friendly chap but has been know to protect the lab from intruders with his loud bark. So be careful if the "Bandit in Lab" sign is posted. Bandit's favorite activity is fetch and is thinking about enrolling for his third degree - "agility". He spends many of his days with buddies at the "club"
